Ephod and Breastplate
The Ephod is the sacred priestly garment worn by the high priest, containing the Urim and Thummim for divine consultation - part of the elaborate vestments that made Aaron a living representation of all Israel. Among the sacred implements described in the priestly traditions of Second Temple literature, the ephod and breastplate stand out as instruments through which divine knowledge could be accessed in an orderly, ritual manner. The Book of Jubilees places these garments at the heart of Levi’s consecration, portraying them not merely as vestments but as markers of an eternal priestly line chosen to mediate between heaven and earth. In Jubilees 32, Levi receives the full array of priestly clothing during the festival at Bethel, an investiture that explicitly includes the ephod and the breastplate containing the Urim and Thummim, thereby authorizing his descendants to inquire of God on behalf of Israel. These two objects functioned together as a single oracular device. The breastplate, set with twelve stones corresponding to the tribes, held the mysterious Urim and Thummim whose flashing or silent response revealed the divine will in matters of war, kingship, and communal decision. Jubilees emphasizes that this capacity for revelation was transmitted through Levi’s line alone, distinguishing authentic priestly service from any unauthorized attempt to manipulate heavenly knowledge-an anxiety also visible in the Watchers traditions of 1 Enoch, where illicit transmission of secrets disrupts cosmic order. Within the wider Enochic corpus the ephod and breastplate acquire an additional, cosmological dimension. Just as the angels in 1 Enoch minister before the divine throne in garments of glory, the earthly high priest clothed in these same articles mirrors celestial liturgy. The texts thus present the priestly regalia as a bridge between the visible sanctuary and the heavenly temple, ensuring that Israel’s petitions remain aligned with the fixed laws governing both creation and history.

1nd on the new moon of the month Jacob spake to all the people of his house. saying: 'Purify yourselves and change your garments, and let us arise and go up to Bethel, where I vowed a vow to Him on the day when I fled from the face of Esau my brother, because he has been with me and brought me into this land in peace, and put ye away the strange gods that arc among you.'
