What is the Book of Enoch?
The Book of Enoch, or 1 Enoch, is an ancient apocalyptic work attributed to the patriarch Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Written across the Second Temple period (roughly the third century BCE to the first century CE), it recounts the fall of the Watchers - two hundred angels who descend on Mount Hermon and father the giant Nephilim - and Enoch's journeys through the heavens, where he beholds the throne of glory and the coming judgment through the Son of Man. It is quoted directly in the New Testament Epistle of Jude, and survives complete only in Ge'ez, the language of Ethiopia, where it remains canonical scripture.
This edition is the translation of R.H. Charles (1917), which is in the public domain. It is a composite of five originally separate books, listed below.
