Illustration for The Book of the Secrets of Enoch

The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, commonly called 2 Enoch or Slavonic Enoch, survives chiefly in Old Church Slavonic. It opens as Enoch, aged 365, is visited by two immense angels who carry him up through seven heavens. He sees the storehouses of the snow and dew, the angels who govern the stars, the torments prepared for the wicked and the paradise prepared for the righteous. In the seventh heaven he stands before the face of God, who dictates to him the secrets of creation, and Enoch writes 366 books. Returned to earth for thirty days, he instructs his sons and is then taken up for ever. The edition presented here is the shorter recension, which ends with Enoch's ascent; the account of the priestly succession and the miraculous birth of Melchizedek belongs to the longer recension and is not included.
