Michael

Portrait of Michael

Michael is the chief archangel, protector of Israel, who is commanded to bind the leader Semjaza and his fallen companions until the day of final judgment. Among the celestial figures depicted in the ancient apocryphal writings attributed to Enoch, one archangel stands out as the appointed leader of the heavenly host, entrusted with safeguarding the righteous and executing divine judgments against rebellious powers. In the Book of Enoch, this being appears repeatedly as a mediator who brings the cries of humanity before the Most High, particularly during the era of corruption unleashed by the fallen Watchers. His interventions underscore a cosmic order where mercy and justice intersect, positioning him as a protector whose authority extends over both the affairs of men and the containment of chaotic forces. Specific passages illuminate these duties with precision. In 1 Enoch 9:1-3, he joins three other archangels in observing the bloodshed caused by the Watchers' offspring, prompting their collective appeal to heaven. Chapter 10 then assigns him the task of binding the leaders of the transgression and purifying the earth, while Enoch 20:5 describes him as set over the best portion of humanity and the chaotic realms. His character emerges further in Enoch 40:9 as the embodiment of mercy and long-suffering, interceding on behalf of those who dwell on the earth. These roles highlight his function not merely as an enforcer but as a compassionate advocate within the divine council. The Book of Jubilees reinforces this portrait by naming him among the angels of the presence who dictate the law to Moses and oversee the division of nations, as seen in Jubilees 1:27 and 2:1-2. Here he contends with adversarial spirits such as Mastema, ensuring the protection of Israel's lineage. Although references in the Book of Jasher are more incidental, they align with his broader depiction as a warrior of light who shields the faithful amid conflict. Within the Enochian tradition, such portrayals establish him as a bridge between heavenly decree and human endurance, embodying the texts' emphasis on divine oversight amid apocalyptic upheaval.

Michael Pleads for the Watchers

The Book of Enoch 9:1-11

Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel report the violence on earth caused by the Watchers and their giant offspring, asking the Lord of Spirits for judgment.

A1nd then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth.

2 And they said one to another: 'The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their cryingst up to the gates of heaven. 3 And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, "Bring our cause before the Most High."' 4 And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages! 5 Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all 6 things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee. 6 Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn: 7 And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. 8 And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. 9 And the women have 10 borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness. 10 And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are wrought on the earth. 11 And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.'

Michael and the Angels in Jubilees

The Book of Jubilees 10:7-14

In Jubilees, Michael speaks before God on behalf of the spirits of the sons of men; God commands the angels to teach Noah the healing herbs after the Flood.

A7nd the Lord our God bade us to bind all.

8 And the chief of the spirits, Mastêmâ, came and said: 'Lord, Creator, let some of them remain before me, and let them harken to my voice, and do all that I shall say unto them; for if some of them are not left to me, I shall not be able to execute the power of my will on the sons of men; for these are for corruption and leading astray before my judgment, for great is the wickedness of the sons of men.' 9 And He said: Let the tenth part of them remain before him, and let nine parts descend into the place of condemnation.' 10 And one of us He commanded that we should teach Noah all their medicines; for He knew that they would not walk in uprightness, nor strive in righteousness. 11 And we did according to all His words: all the malignant evil ones we bound in the place of condemnation and a tenth part of them we left that they might be subject before Satan on the earth. 12 And we explained to Noah all the medicines of their diseases, together with their seductions, how he might heal them with herbs of the earth. 13 And Noah wrote down all things in a book as we instructed him concerning every kind of medicine. Thus the evil spirits were precluded from (hurting) the sons of Noah. 14 And he gave all that he had written to Shem, his eldest son; for he loved him exceedingly above all his sons.
