What are the heavenly tablets?

The heavenly tablets are celestial records containing all divine decrees, laws, and the predetermined course of history from creation to the end. They stand as the ultimate source of authority throughout Jubilees and 1 Enoch, holding the eternal laws that govern Israel along with the fates of all creatures inscribed before creation itself. These tablets embody the conviction that every event unfolds according to a fixed divine plan, offering comfort to the righteous and warning to the wicked.

In Jubilees the angel of the presence reads them to Moses on Sinai, showing that the laws given to Israel are eternal decrees rather than new inventions. Enoch himself reads the tablets of heaven in 1 Enoch 81 and 93, learning the history of future generations, the deeds of humanity, and the coming judgment. They record not only what will happen but what should happen, serving as both prophecy and law at once, and they are referenced more than thirty times in Jubilees alone as the authority that overrides all human tradition.

The tablets also promise joy and glory to the spirits of the righteous who die, so that they live and rejoice forever, while warning sinners that their souls enter darkness without peace.
