What are the Nephilim?

The Nephilim are the giant offspring born from the union of Watchers and human women, whose violence and consumption provoked the Flood (1 Enoch 7). These monstrous beings of immense size and insatiable appetite emerged directly from the Watchers' descent and illicit unions, an event in which the angels led by Semjaza and Azazel bound themselves by oath on Mount Hermon before taking wives and producing a hybrid race (1 Enoch 6). Their unnatural origins violated the boundaries of creation and set in motion a cascade of disorder, as they devoured human provisions, oppressed the people, and even consumed one another amid escalating bloodshed that filled the earth with lawlessness (1 Enoch 7). Jubilees portrays their role in amplifying iniquity until the earth itself cried out for relief, framing them as embodiments of unchecked chaos whose presence demanded heavenly intervention and cosmic judgment to restore balance (Jubilees 5). The archangels' intercession and the subsequent decree further reveal how these figures exposed the need for a renewed creation after the boundaries of the natural order had been crossed (1 Enoch 9) (1 Enoch 10).
